Fort de Bellegarde is one of some fortress located near the borden between France and Spain and it was built after the Pyrenees treaty in 1659 to defend French Empire. In fact, you can see it from highway and some roads, it is located on the top of a mountain. Walls are very nice, but you can see here garbage.

Fort de Bellegarde History and description The Bellegarde hill (420 m. alt.) dominates the Perthus pass (271 m.) perched on the Franco-Spain border. The site has been occupied since the middle Ages, the objective being to take control of the pass.

Construit par Vauban au XVIII° siècle, le fort est un chef d'oeuvre d'architecture militaire. Il visait à surveiller les deux points d'entrées les plus aisés vers la France, les cols du Perthus et de Panissars. De sa terrasse, la vue est unique sur la plaine du Roussillon et de l'Empordà. Entre France et Espagne, le fort domine les deux Catalognes.
